Socks
Illustrated by Nick Sharratt
‘SOCKYWOCKYDOODAH!’ is the refrain that begins this wacky follow up to Sharratt’s pair of ‘Pants’ titles and so right from the outset we know we are in for another treat. On a visit to sockland we encounter amongst others, a sockerel, Goldisocks, a hipposockamus, a socksophnoist and a sockodile, deep sea dive on a sockmarine and visit the Sock Ness Monster, all in the course of a socktastic SOCKYWOCKYDOODAH-DAY.
I’m not sure who had more fun: Elizabeth Lindsay inventing socky wordplay puns and animals like the sockatoos or Nick Sharratt turning out his sock drawer to create his accompanying socky doodles. Sheer exuberant enjoyment of language and creativity abound. Children are sure to want to try their hand at their own versions both verbal and pictorial. This is a book that makes one want to collect up every child under seven in the vicinity, sit them down and ‘sock it to them.’
