Sarah Garland's last two books have been firmly rooted in English domesticity so it is a surprise - though a pleasant one - to find this series of Cubs have a cowboy as their hero. Text and his horse Gloria are far from the glamorous image one usually associates with Westerns; in fact they appear to be two of life's natural victims. Despite Tex's incompetence however, together the pair always manage to come to on top.
With their bubbletalk, short text and subject matter, these are a good bet for the more reluctant, and possibly slightly older reader.
