Jilly, You Look Terrible
Illustrated by Joanna Stubbs
This was tailor-made for all the little girls in my class who love weddings, dressing up and wearing Tinkerbell lipstick. Jitly decides that she really needs make-up on if she it to do herself justice at the wedding she is going to ... but like so many children she doesn't know when to draw the line. What a good job the bride has such a nice nature! The illustrations are particularly effective. They convey the feelings of the characters very well and certainly help with a not specially easy text; personality is sometimes missing but these are character. I don't think the children would pick this as an all-time classic, but it was well liked and we enjoyed reading it. It also inspired several long monologues of the 'When I was a bridesmaid' variety ... you have been warned!
