This is the autobiography of an exceptionally resourceful hamster who has reached old age after a life of great escapes. The narrative pace is well maintained as he reflects upon his experiences of captivity, liberation, sex, religion and the brutality of Man and Nature. As a fictional furry animal, Houdini is a refreshingly uncuddly individual, and his struggles to resolve the conflict between domestic security and the perils of freedom might evoke some sympathy among older children pondering similar choices.
