Birdy and the Ghosties

Jill Paton Walsh
Illustrated by Alan Marks
0356167801
8-10 Junior/Middle

Birdy lives at the junction of a river, a road and the sea. Her father the ferryman has been told that she has second sight, and one day, when a trio of invisible phantoms ask to be rowed over to a non-existent island. Birdy's gift enables us to see both the horror and the paathos of these grisly passengers. This short and powerful story is excellent for reading aloud. The accessible text also provides readers acquiring independence with a vivid adventure story, underlaid by hinted complexities which will appeal to more meditative children.
