The perils of not reading are graphically illustrated in this tale of two chickens - Harriet, an avid reader, and Winnie, her silly sister. Winnie is blissfully unaware that the nice Mr Johnson who invites her for a balloon ride is a fox and has every intention of eating her. Harriet's neighbours can't believe she could be so stupid. ' "Didn't she know it was a fox?" "She never reads," said Harriet. Fortunately Harriet's cleverness. not to mention the timely reappearance of the balloon. ensure there is a happy ending. James Marshall knows his readers will know all about foxes, and chicken jokes, and it is this knowledge shared between author and reader. but not Winnie, that makes the book so hilarious.
