Almost seventy years have passed since the first appearance of this book, and the serene world that it evokes now seems as remote as the moon. But rampaging through that world comes a figure so instantly recognizable, so uncomplicatedly comical, that one longs to step into the book, slap him on the back, and ask him where he's been all these years.

William's guerilla campaigns against adult tranquility, his thwarted quests for honourable adventure, and his wildly inappropriate air of wounded dignity, are all as hilarious as ever. This facsimile of the first edition provides us with the bonus of Thomas henry's original illustrations. The penultimate paragraph contains one of the most poignant images of childhood I have ever read. Highly recommended for everyone, but especially for adults of a certain age - like the Editor of BfK.
