The writer maintains her own balance beautifully in a story that hurtles along veering between comedy and seriousness. It's a school skiing trip, a gallery of strongly differentiated types, but all nicely earthbound, who experience skiing for the first time. The parallel stories of the boy who has to pretend to be the son of the owner of Harrods at a dinner party and the two who have to survive a skiing accident typify the crafted blending of elements. It's good fun.
