This moving, powerfully-written novel is set in Nazi-occupied Paris. The narrator, 15-year-old David, a Jewish boy, has settled with his parents in France in the hope of avoiding persecution. However, David's parents are taken away and he finds himself passed from place to place in a succession of refuges. By the end he is left alone trying to cope with his feelings of loss and guilt. The style is deceptively simple, making the book accessible to readers of all abilities. Highly recommended and worth placing alongside The Diary of Anne Frank and Friedrich.
