Written by a professional archaeologist, this book is set in the south-eastern Britain of 54 BC. It relates the adventures of two young Britons as they follow the older warriors on their way to repel the Roman invaders under Caesar. Adam and Marik manage to infiltrate the enemy camp and, in doing so, learn of a betrayal and a secret plan to destroy their own community. The story is well-paced with some interesting details about life in Ancient Britain, though the sometimes wooden dialogue made me flinch occasionally. The author glosses over the nastier aspects of warfare, so the book might appeal to older juniors who like to view combat from a safe distance.
