This welcome reissue of Faith Jaques' classic story of Tilly, the little wooden doll, is perfect as a read-aloud to infants or for young, fluent readers to enjoy for themselves. The story is so convincingly worked out, and the ways Tilly overcomes her problems are so cunning, that the whole thing is completely engaging. The detailed pictures of how Tilly puts yoghurt pots and a Smarties tube to work are delightful and interesting (surely she's an infant teacher in the making!). The message - that friendship, independence and ingenuity can overcome the worst of obstacles - is not a bad one to pass on, either.
