This gripping thriller/suspense tale is a notable achievement for a first novel. The story of Simon, the tortured, undead vampire who 'looked like an angel in a Renaissance painting', captures the reader with its poignant, imprisoning sadness, just as he holds Zoe in thrall. She too is a being who knows pain and suffering and commands our sympathy. Death and loss, life and love are explored with compelling artistry and sensitivity. Rather costly for schools at 6.99 (but it is a paperback original). So far it's my book of the year!
