Children who go straight for 'spine-chilling' titles are often disappointed. The real interest in these five long stories is the way that strange happenings transform children's lives. There's a range of settings and unusual incidents (my favourite is the flying old lady), but the focus is on the children who are caught up in the loss or separation of parents and cope with the frustrations of relationships and try to cement new ones. An impressive lightness of touch here.
