This is a gem of a book, both delicately crafted and down to earth. It's an ideal bridge between teenage fiction and that wide world of adult novels - not much of a jump to Margaret Atwood from here. Emma becomes infatuated with a Japanese conductor and then with all things Japanese. Her rites of passage take her through two other relationships observed with a lovely dry wit before she finally makes her journey of love to Japan. She meets her conductor in Tokyo ... but I'll not spoil the ending. This is special and worth attention.
