When Mehmet's family is drawn away from their country roots by the promise of quick and certain wealth in the city, they become a small addition to Ankara's poor. The disillusionment is deeply realised in a sequence of injustices and sufferings. Experience seems to batter Mehmet but the author holds out a vision of colour and happiness despite the mud and madness. It's impressive and well judged as children's reading. Teachers will probably want to share the story and the ideas.
