Sam develops a passion for rats which converts him from a struggling non-reader to an expert well-versed in the literature of Rattus rattus, family Rodentia. But this learning spurt fails to persuade his parents to allow him to own a pet rat, so he has to resort to other tactics, especially as he's already secretly bought one of the creatures ... A delightful book, packed with good jokes. The relentless emotional attrition Sam inflicts on his parents is particularly hilarious. Lucidity and humour make this a particularly valuable addition to the range of stories offered to readers approaching independence.
