This magnificent book is dedicated to the children of the world. Its sources are almost as diverse as its dedicatees. Creation myths from the Arctic and Australia are interleaved with tales from Grimm, Andersen and Terry Jones. Finn McCool and the Sleeping Beauty appear alongside less familiar characters from Japan, Sikkim, New Zealand and Mexico. The retellings are direct and deeply engaging. Michael Foreman's illustrations provide a matching degree of beauty and fascination. Many of the pages blaze resplendently, while others provide the muted illumination of dreamtime. Each story is headed by a reminiscence of its country of origin, and by a haunting miniature landscape. Highly recommended for readers, listeners and book lovers of all ages.
