A very cleverly constructed thriller about a flirtation between the son of a wealthy parliamentarian and a schoolgirl from a villainous background. Frances writes Damien an admiring letter after he rescues a dog from a well. When he replies their friendship begins to flourish, but soon Frances' thuggish brother begins to take an interest. The tale is told entirely through the interchange of letters. This is a very effective device, which should fascinate older children and encourage lively speculation about the implicit events evolving in parallel.
