The story of 16-year-old Penny's romantic relationships is set against the background of her illegitimacy and life with her mother in a tower block. The setting and domestic situations will strike chords with some readers. However, sloppy syntax, trivial dialogue and a lack of development in the central characters combine with a weak close to produce an unsatisfying overall impression.
