BfK No. 78 - January 1993

Cover story
On the front of BfK this month is the cover of Yesterday by Adèle Geras. The artwork is by Carolyn Piggford. This book is one from the 'Teenage Memoirs' series published by Walker (see the article, All Their Yesterdays, in this issue) and Adèle, of course, is the subject of our Authorgraph - see centre-spread. Our thanks to Walker Books for their help in using this illustration.

Amanda is afraid of the dark, until a star child takes her flying through the night to see all the good things that can only be seen when it's dark. Like The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark this would be a very helpful story for young children who dislike night-time. The short text isn't simple, but it's clear and the ideas are thoughtful. I wish the artist had made the dark darker; especially in the view of the city where the colours used are daytime ones. This is a pity since it weakens the interaction between a good text and its illustrations.
