Cover story
On the front of BfK this month is the cover of Yesterday by Adèle Geras. The artwork is by Carolyn Piggford. This book is one from the 'Teenage Memoirs' series published by Walker (see the article, All Their Yesterdays, in this issue) and Adèle, of course, is the subject of our Authorgraph - see centre-spread. Our thanks to Walker Books for their help in using this illustration.
The Wearing of the Green
The last book in Linda Newbery's First World War trilogy which follows Patrick Leary's fortunes as he awakens in Ireland after a near-fatal injury, sustained fighting at Gallipoli. An extended holiday with his family coincides with the Irish Rising of 1916 in which he becomes unwittingly involved. Newbery gives us a political and emotional dimension here: it's Patrick's cousin who is determined to fight in the Rising, so his own loyalties are tested (since he's a British Army officer) and an emotional entanglement with Siobhan brings him the first serious relationship of his life. This is well-researched, convincing writing which provides a satisfactory conclusion to the trilogy - or is it to be a quartet?
