Matty's Midnight Monster
Illustrated by Diann Timms
One expects a lot from Gene Kemp and she pulls no punches with this book. Diann Timms' illustrations more than do her justice, too. It depicts Matty who likes to be scared - a little - coping with a positively terrifying nightmare, having insisted on borrowing a book her grandmother didn't really want her to read. A title for school this isn't - but it ought to be prescribed for every parent suffering with their child's nightmares. It is catharsis with a vengeance and needs to be carefully and sensitively shared with children.
