Stories about seals are always popular, and this will be no exception. Reluctantly, Owen has come with his father and new stepmother to live in an isolated cottage on the Welsh coast. He's befriended by Eleri, a girl of his own age (11-ish), and her Merlin-like grandfather, though friction develops when Owen finds a magical stone and obstinately refuses to return it to the sea. The fantasy elements of the story are underdeveloped, but nevertheless this is an attractive novel to offer young readers or to read aloud.
