Tangle is one of the little people who live in burrows in Northwoods - in reality the countryside of northern America. His impetuous and thoughtless behaviour lands him in trouble and he is banished from the settlement and the company of his friends. Bored, he decides to explore and discovers a valley beyond the mountains where he meets a gentle giant and learns the secret of the firesticks and lessons about himself. In his closely observed illustrations of the diminutive Northwoodsfolk and their world, the artist focuses upon the many small wonders of nature: a butterfly wing, a feather, an eggshell, as well as the expanse of the northern landscape and its flora and fauna.
