Danger at Dark Hows

Patricia Sibley
0732406749
8-10 Junior/Middle

It is 1782, and Will and Lucy's carpenter father is drowned on the Royal George: Will barely escapes with his life. Orphaned but robust, he's sent to work in the dreaded Dark Hows Derbyshire cotton mill where the children are starved and beaten by the owner and his overseer, Badger. This dependable story ensures that right triumphs, and there are plenty of moments of high tension along the way. Many rewarding historical links here: this is a winner for top junior/Year 7 pupils - it may even fill the neglected niche of good books for boys.
