I can see why this won the Smarties Young Judges Award. It meets a lot of wish fulfilment - parents left to their confusing lives, holing up in a cave, in this case in France, and going feral. When I read the cover blurb, I couldn't imagine how anyone would succeed in making me believe that parents could leave their child behind by mistake - credit to Ms Laird; she did it admirably. As well as the action and tension, there' a thoughtful under-current of how isolated from each other parents and their offspring can be without necessarily recognising it.
