Rotten Island is an extremely unpleasant place, so hot by day the sea boils, so cold at night that all life freezes. And what life; ugly, vicious monsters whose chief aim is to make one another suffer. But it's the blooming of a beautiful flower in this hostile environment which leads to the destruction and transofrmation of this terrible world. Steig's creatures are angry in colour shape and deed and, though this is a moral tale, there seems to be rather too much emphasis on the negative for my taste. For sophisticalted readers only.
