As father and daughter walk home from school talking over the day, we see their different interpretations of what went on. This is sheer escapist fun with wonderful Thurber-like images. When the traffic was held up, for instance, was it by roadworks ... or was it by highwaymen? The book finishes with two versions of a letter outlining a trip the next day - one in code for the child and the other an innocuous letter for parents asking that the child wear wellies and sensible clothes. We're left to decide just where we think the children will really be going.
