Saint George and the Dragon
Illustrated by Nicki Palin
A lucid and powerfully illustrated retelling of the Christian legend. Geraldine McCaughrean's prose is economical but with telling poetic flourishes reminiscent of folk tale. The fiery paintings which surround the print present a traditional, chivalric idealisation of the hero and a vivid account of the horrors within the besieged city. George's departure into sainthood and folklore is strikingly conveyed by both text and image, and is alluded to in an interesting historical postscript which emphasises the universality of the dragon-slaying archetype. A splendid book for storytime and for supporting topics on myths and legends.
