Jonas lives in an apparently perfect world, where order and conformity generate happiness. When he's assigned to the Giver in order to receive the memories of the community, he discovers his life has been a careful facade, denying emotions and choices. His decision to return these memories to the community and his subsequent flight lead to a thought-provoking ending which matches the remainder of the narrative in linguistic inventiveness and subtlety.
