A squabble between two mismatched sisters, one cloyingly girlie, the other a bit of a rip, over who should play a cute role in an amateur theatrical production sounds like a good start for some swingeing stereotypes, but in Jean Ure's deft hands the scene is set for a thoroughly unsentimental family comedy. Dad's evasiveness and mum's favouritism, together with clan tensions which unleash the rivalry between Rose and Nicola, are pitilessly disclosed in the course of the story. The overall mood remains light-hearted, and the climax is a celebration of individuality and independence.
