The Church Mice books are very demanding of their readers' observation and literary skills. The pictures and print interact tightly and children need to be able to read both with equal ease to understand the long and often complex narrative. Having said that, there's no doubt they repay the informed attention of the reader. This entertaining story about the attempts made by the Church Mice to find a good home for the stray puppy who is living in the churchyard has many lovely written and visual jokes. It is intelligent, witty and highly rewarding. Best as an individual treat, rather than for reading to a group, because of the close detail in the illustrations. It'll be enjoyed by any bright reader with a soft heart.
