A strange mix of a story, part fairy tale, which eventually becomes a moving account of Amy's attempts to rescue the snowman. He's been made by the cruel and heartless Balthazar Grot with ice for a heart and is therefore unable to melt. Amy arranges for the snowman to come to the summer beach, to take part in the sandcastle competition which will give them access to the funfair in the hope of showing him the best side of human beings. It isn't so easy-the climax will leave many readers sad but satisfied.
