The first historical study of American children’s books as a separate genre, it’s claimed. If so, then this scholarly, sharply written and warm-hearted survey - which spans new world texts from 1621-1922 along with the old world texts that influenced them - could postpone the second indefinitely. For me there were revelations, and re-evaluations, on almost every spread.
