Cover Story
The March cover of BfK features Dilly the Dinosaur who is 10 years old this year. Her author, Tony Bradman, is the subject of our Authorgraph this month. We are grateful to Reed Books for their help in reproducing this illustration from Susan Hellard's original artwork.
Evie refuses to match her mother's version of femininity, continuing to play a key part in running the family farm. When she falls in love with a girl, she forces family and community (as well as the reader) to square their sense of her as a person with their views on lesbianism. Narrated through her brother's eyes, this has the feel of a larger novel, a larger slice of life, told with a light touch, yet creating the density of people's lives without simplifying and cheapening. It's a splendid example of what fiction can do, and the insight and understanding it can bring.
