Both fiction and non-fiction is eligible for the award, novels or pictures, the criteria being that they ‘offer language rich in layered meanings, imaginative expression and exciting vocabulary’. The judges are 50 teachers from schools in Liverpool, Leicester and Manchester. This year, the judging process has been ‘shadowed’ by 90 student trainee teachers in 60 universities.
