Storm Chaser

Author: Sheila Rance

Maia has successfully caught the sun – she is the Sun Catcher. Elin, her older sister, has been ousted from the throne. But there other demands upon her. She must journey back to her old home on the cliffs to rescue the magical silk for the Story Coats. Her companions are her friends, Razek, Kodo and Zena – but who can she really trust? What does she herself really want?

This is the second book in the trilogy that began with Sun Chaser, picking up at the moment that novel ends. While it would certainly be of advantage to have read the first, the author cleverly fills in much of the background through dialogue and short descriptive asides that never halt the pace of the narrative. The style is brisk, driving the action forward, action which is seen through the eyes of a number of characters. While Maia is central, the reader is very much aware of  the other protagonists and is privy to their thoughts and motivations. Though this fragments the narrative to certain extent, it also brings interest and colour. The background is vivid and has a credibility that does not rely on long drawn explanations. Rather the reader is swept along relishing the relationships, the adventure and the politics . Very much recommended for readers who have already enjoyed Michelle Paver’s Wolf Brother sequence and are looking to move on. I now want to know what happens next.
