Jitterbug Jam: A Monster Tale

This large format picture book features a timid young monster Bobo who just for a change is regularly scared by a child hiding under his bed. Going to grandfather Boo-Dad for advice, Bobo is told to look at children straight in the eye in order to make them disappear. More clever variations follow, told in finger-licking American prose rich in dialect and superbly illustrated by Deacon. But one complaint: Bobo is shown early on hiding in a cupboard by slamming the door on himself. In The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe C S Lewis twice warns children of the folly of locking themselves away by accident. This book, aimed at a younger audience, almost seems to encourage it.
