Betsy Makes a Splash! A Betsy first experiences book

Author: Helen Stephens

The books in this series help prepare young children for adventures in the real world.  Sharing this one would be a helpful prelude to a visit to the swimming pool or, afterwards, support a satisfying  resavouring of all that happened. I like the fact that this author does not pretend that every new experience is absolutely wonderful straight away.  Betsy did not like it when Poppy and Holly jumped in the pool and splashed her: ‘I asked Mummy if we could go home’.  And, at first, the water slide looks rather terrifying.   We are told the story by Betsy and this gives her visit to the pool an immediacy which will appeal to young listeners. Colourful, lively pictures with a firm dark line include the sort of detail – pool toys, hairdryers, the fare in the café – likely to invite comments and questions.
