Farm

Authors: Mary Novick, Jenny Hale

Zoo, 978-1904700111

A cloud becomes the underside of a leaping horse and the four legs of a chair become a lion’s limbs when you lift the flaps in these excitingly interactive picture books. So they are certainly likely to entertain. But the questions that run through will encourage children to think and talk. Farm for example asks ‘Who bathes in the mud?’ and the flap can be pulled down to transform a pink bath into a pink pig rolling in the mud.

In Zoo two young children are shown on each page laughing, pointing and taking photographs. This helps provide continuity as we visit animals in different parts of the zoo, and no doubt young listeners will be looking out for the children on re-readings of the book. The ingenious transformations mean that these books will intrigue and entertain today’s young children, children whose visual literacy is often advanced.
