Russian Roulette
Fans of the Alex Rider series will be delighted by the publication of this latest instalment in the series. A prequel to former novels, it takes the unusual approach of concentrating on anti-hero Yassen’s background, cleverly building up his background and motivations. Yassen’s childhood was lived out in Estrov, however, it was brought to an abrupt end when an accident occurs resulting in the devastation of the entire settlement.
Managing to escape, Yassen relies upon his wits to survive, but after a bungled burglary, is enslaved by Vladimir Sharkovsky. Tormented by Vladimir and his son Ivan, Yassen is desperate to escape, particularly when Sharkovsky’s connection to Yassen’s family are revealed. Following a nail-biting escape sequence, Yassen becomes involved with the Scorpia organisation – its name derived from ‘Sabotage, Corruption, Intelligence and Assassination’ – where he makes links with John Rider, father of Alex.
This is an intelligent, action-adventure thriller that deftly redefines views and perceptions on the Alex Rider series and much that he has faced throughout the series.
