Snow White and the Seven Bears
Illustrator: David MellingBased on the familiar tale of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs this story is about Snow White’s great-great granddaughter and namesake who is searching for her missing teddy bear; ‘The cuddliest teddy of them all,’ who she probably left alone in the woods. Luckily, she has the famous magic mirror to help her and there is no evil stepmother to thwart her plans. While searching in the woods Snow White spots glimpses of furry ears, wet noses and whiskers and so thinks she has found her bear on several occasions. However, these sightings turn out to be ‘real’ bears not teddies, six of them in fact, all with delightful names such as Muddy, Honey and Woody. Snow White’s mirror continues to guide her until she is eventually reunited with her teddy who is safe and cosy in the arms of the seventh bear.
This is an amusing quest story with a cumulative text, a memorable chorus and delightful illustrations. It would be a great fun to read aloud to very young children, particularly if they are familiar with the original story.
Another playful retelling of a traditional story continuing the successful collaboration between writer Michael Rosen and illustrator David Melling which produced Not so Little Riding Hood and Goldilocks and the Three Crocodiles.
