Tales from the Keep: The Ferret Princess

Author: Joan LennonIllustrator: Scoular Anderson

The intriguing cover image of a princess wearing one red shoe and one green sets the scene for this playful story of a feisty young heroine outmanoeuvring her suitors. Princess Cecilia, a carefree, tomboy sort of girl, is happily perched on the battlements reading and enjoying the spring air, with, at her side, her favourite pet ferret. Her mother the Queen, with whom she shares the tumbledown castle, is ill in bed. Havoc breaks out when housekeeper Fat Margaret announces the arrival of royal guests. Count Edward of Frore and the Duke of Dram, having heard exaggerated reports of the Queen’s illness, have come as rival suitors to win the Princess’s hand – and her kingdom. Now the Princess has to come up with a plan – and fast – to send the suitors packing. A fairytale of sorts, this is a high-spirited and humorous story, made all the more enjoyable by energetic and expressive black and white illustrations.
