The Cupcake Wedding

Author: Gillian CrossIllustrator: Nina de Polonia

Holly’s sister Mia and her boyfriend James are going to get married. The family is pleased but a little worried because they are only eighteen. They don’t have much money so everyone is trying to help. Holly, who loves baking, wants to make the cake for their wedding. She decides to make cupcakes, but there will be so many guests that she will need help. First of all, her friends, Poppy, Tom and Bella help out. Then she asks her whole class to bake. Just when all her plans seem to be going well, Mia and James start to get cold feet. Can Holly get the cakes done and can she help Mia to decide about her wedding?

The Cupcake Wedding is published by Barrington Stoke, a publisher whose books are aimed at struggling, reluctant or dyslexic readers. They use short word lengths; lots of chapter breaks; cream paper to minimise glare; a dyslexia-friendly font; special spacing; and illustrations to aid understanding. They also trial their books on children of the correct reading age to make sure that the level is appropriate. The Cupcake Wedding has a reading age of 8.
