The Invisibles
Welcome to the Land of Magics, an idyllic fantastical world, where gossamer-winged pink pigs float through the cloudless SeaSky and there are no grown-ups, only a small group of children, practising their own particular Magic powers, fed and clothed from magical trees and educated by the books on Library Island.
Merlin is convinced that his Magic is the most powerful of them all and, full of self-importance, scoffs at the warnings surrounding the Island of Darkness, both from his friend Vincent and those of the magical Book of Secrets. The more he looks out into the dark across from his home, the more Merlin can’t resist the pull of the Island of Darkness and sets out in the middle of the night determined to prove his friends and those doubting books wrong, but the closer he gets to the island, the worse the weather becomes and Merlin eventually finds himself on the island, faced with the nightmarish creatures he was warned about, realising that his magical powers can no longer help him.
We are next suddenly transported to the world of Wasteland, meeting an originally nameless young girl, who is lost and alone, without any memories of who is she or where she has come from.
She quite literally stumbles across a pair of invisible children, who initially distrust and steal from her, but eventually come to accept her, slowly explaining and revealing more about the world she has found herself in, including her name and that they already know each other. Grace learns that in Wasteland, children are to be feared and reported to the Catcher, who is constantly searching for them, so he may take them back to the Creature, who wants their powers for herself. Can they work together to defeat these horrors and make their way home to the Land of Magics?
This is such an original and gripping tale, full of so many twists and turns, with excitement and ‘gasp out loud’ revelations. As readers, we are kept as much in the dark as Grace, with true identities and hidden secrets being gradually shared with us as the tale develops and it definitely kept me guessing right up to the end of the book. A story of friendships, forgiveness and fantasy, with thrills aplenty, this is sure to be a very popular read.
