The Magic Box

Illustrator: Richard Morgan

Review also includes:

The Magic Blanket, **, 978-1845064006

Pretend play gets the pop-up treatment as two children use a box and a blanket to create stories of adventure and exploration. Morgan creates some dynamic images of far-flung places, from desert oases to rockets and Viking ships.  The Magic Box  allows the reader to guess what will happen in the story as the next adventure is shown in the background. However, no such device is present in  The Magic Blanket  where each spread shows a completely different imaginary scene thus diminishing the importance of the narrative. Despite their rather clunky texts these books work well.
