These Rights Are Your Rights
Illustrator: Sue CheungThe title page indicates the purpose of this handy-sized volume: ‘An empowering guide for children everywhere,’ and famous humanitarian Angelina Jolie has written the preface.
This book is helpfully divided into five parts: Your Very Own Book of Rights; Know Your Rights; Stand Up for Your Rights; Stay Safe; and Useful Stuff. Fun facts together with jokes, top tips and inspiring stories work together to give young people lots of information about their human rights. Such rights include a safe home, clean surroundings, nourishing food, appropriate education, equality and protection from harm. There are also child rights by which every child under 18 in the UK is protected.
Sue Cheung’s comic-style illustrations work with the text very well whilst diagrams and timelines communicate lots of information clearly. It was interesting to learn more about famous activist Greta Thunberg, as well as Francia Simon who won the International Children’s Peace Prize and other youngsters who have spoken up about issues they feel are important.
Here is a very comprehensive publication covering a wide range of subjects such as fake news, online safety and privacy. I think it would be advisable for a teacher, parent or carer to share this book with a younger child as there are some sensitive topics within the pages. It would be a valuable addition to a school classroom, school library or public library.
