This Little Chick

This board book version of a picture book first published in 2002 is beautiful in every sense. The wonderfully rendered woodblock illustrations show craftsmanship and careful construction for each and every spread. Lawrence clearly knows how to use suspense – the book alternates between smaller images and then sudden bursts of full-page colour at crucial points in the story. This Little Chick will entertain children from 12 months of age. The images are so well depicted that they could serve as an accurate introduction to animals for infants. The rhyme is sing along and a nice twist on the original. The text is nicely integrated with the illustration and is not overpowering. Children of all ages will love the energy and beauty of the book. It is not surprising to see that This Little Chick has won so many accolades, both here and in the United States.
