Through Georgia's Eyes

Author: Rachel RodríguezIllustrator: Julie Paschkis

This is a child’s introduction to early twentieth-century American artist, Georgia O’Keeffe. O’Keeffe was born in Wisconsin in 1887; a time when women did not have the vote and female artists were unheard of. Her parents wanted her to be an art teacher but O’Keeffe had other ideas.

The text is minimal, thoughtful and all the more powerful for this. It may actually be more appropriate for children older than 8-10 year olds. Rodríguez sets out to pay homage to O’Keeffe’s life, work and singular perspective as a woman artist in her time, and, in this, the author succeeds. Paschkis uses cut-out images of actual O’Keeffe paintings to create stunning collages. These tell, graphically, significant moments in O’Keeffe’s life, including her fascination with New Mexico, to where she eventually moved, with her husband, from New York. O’Keeffe died in 1986.

The book concludes with a helpful full-page biography of the artist.
