Twit: The owl who wasn't wise
Illustrator: Jane PorterClearly labelled as an Early Reader, this is a short story that nevertheless provides gentle but satisfying content for newly independent readers. Twit is an owl who is ‘twittish’ and whose three mean brothers take advantage of Twit’s lack of wisdom, playing many and varied practical jokes on their unsuspecting and gullible little brother. After one such incident, Twit meets Norma the vole, who helps Twit develop confidence and a plan to teach his brothers a lesson. Attractively presented with colour illustrations on every page, accompanied by 4-8 lines of text per single page, the book is accessible and appealing for younger readers. Vocabulary is appropriate for a developing reader and will encourage independent reading, yet the text is suitably descriptive and flowing. With warm lessons to learn about friendship and how to treat one another, this is an ‘early reader’ with a pleasing amount of depth.
